Camouflage clothing has had some bad press in recent years and quite wrongly in our view. It can help you fade into the background, or disappear completely, and is worn by everyone from landowners to keepers and from photographers to conservationists.
It's only in the past 100 years that people have moved past standard green cloth. The right camo pattern can make the difference between getting up close with nature or watching your subject turn tail and bolt.
"Different types of creature have different ways of seeing!"
Hoofed animals, such as deer and wild boar, are classed as Ungulates and they have the ability to recognise predators by size and shape. They have 40/20 vision which is poor on detail but good on shape.
They often see us well before we see them as they have 350-degree vision so only a slight movement of the head means they can very easily see what is behind them in all directions.
The vision of birds works slightly differently. Although they still have a wide field of view, and can also see into infrared somewhat, they're not great at shapes so that can be used to your advantage.
Apart from the research modern day militaries invest into camouflage clothing, commercial companies such as Optifade and Realtree have developed gear with various patterns for a range of different environments.
Optifade's camouflage is designed to break up your outline and stop the animals or birds you're trying to get close to from recognising you as a predator.
With Realtree, their patterns overlay sharp foreground elements over a progressively ghosted mid-ground and very soft background. This is designed to fade you into the background of your chosen environment.
And, of course, if you're in the great outdoors in all seasons, then you'll need camouflage clothing that's suitable, whatever the weather.
Countrywear from both Optifade and Realtree can be used as your camouflage 'shell' and we stock a wide range of gear from the likes of Harkila, Jake Pyke and Seeland that can be added to your outfit in layers as the weather requires.
