The human body is a remarkable machine. Keep it fed and watered enough and it usually works without problem for many years. Don't eat and you can function for around 3 weeks before you run into problems and 8 weeks before it becomes fatal.
"But a lack of water is dangerous after just a few days!"
At least 60% of the adult body is made of water, and every living cell in the body needs it to keep functioning. Water acts as a lubricant for our joints, regulates our body temperature through sweating and respiration, and helps to flush waste.
So it makes sense to stay hydrated by regularly drinking water, especially if you start to feel tired or sluggish and can't concentrate. Stop and have a good, long drink and you'll feel much better afterwards.
It's very common for tradesmen to have fizzy pop, but the caffeine in them is a diuretic and any water benefit from the drink gets pee'd away rapidly. Same with tea and coffee to a certain extent, but pure water will cool you down and rehydrate you the quickest.
If you're worried about keeping your water cool during the day, the Internet is full of ciggie-lighter powered coolers for your van or even a picnic cool box with those blue liquid packs you can throw in the fridge overnight will keep your drinks frosty on your job site for most of the day.
"And what if you're at the gym, working up a sweat?"
Well, that depends on how hard you're pushing yourself. If you're just having a gentle jog on a treadmill then water will suffice, but if you're powering through a demanding exercise schedule with weights and various toning machines, water doesn't have the salts you need to reach every cell in your body quickly.
In this case, sports drinks are far better at that so speak to your gym staff and see what they recommend. We're sure they'll happily sell you something.
If you're working on the job-site or working out at the gym, getting thirsty, hot, bothered, tired, sluggish or unable to concentrate could mean you're becoming dehydrated. This can be fatal if you don't drink some water soon.
But if you're pee-ing constantly, feeling bloated, nauseous or headachy, that means you're could actually be over hydrated and drinking too much water The sodium in your blood becomes too diluted and your blood pressure crashes. Again, fatal in extreme cases.
